letter from the future, 2025
Hey Jason,
Can you hear me? I wanted to give you an update on how the year went. I know that 2024 was challenging in a lot of ways. In contrast to 2023, it was very different. 2024 was when things really picked up. You did so much. I'm really proud of you for that.
Let me tell you about 2025.
I'm writing this to you from the Eames chair. You wanted this thing for so long - you've been talking about it since 2016. I love it. It's perfect.
You get to sit here and write and think, and when people come over, you sit them here. You let them know that this is important to you, and you can talk to them in your office. It's amazing.
Let me tell you what happened. The start of the year was pretty chill. You were locked in, focused on the course, and it made some decent money. You started marketing it, and it sold out. That was just a good amount of money to kick off the rest of the year.
You had the two courses, ran them twice - that was great. You got a couple more clients, too. The average contract size was around $80,000, which gave you enough money to know you could pay your team and afford the apartment with a few luxuries. After you knew you were breaking even, you didn't worry much about making more money. It was amazing - you got to focus on yourself in a way that felt pure.
You also wrote some really solid pieces. A lot of the stuff you wrote last year, as you know, was under the principle that volume negates luck, and you got pretty far.
I've been working on these two essays for four or five months now, and I'm really excited to publish them. I think they're going to be well received.
What did you do with that time? You hosted more events and brought people together. You did a dinner every month. You brought your friends together - it was incredible. You went to Kelly's and Pedram's, and Pedram's been doing a lot more shows. It was wonderful. You made many friends in New York, especially those in tech, and you found a community of people who were in tech but also had a much bigger creative side.
When David and Henry come by, you do the baths - they're still a regular thing. You get massages regularly, and that's beautiful. You're going to Kelly and Pedram's regularly, seeing more shows. You saw Othello, Wicked, The Outsiders - that was incredible. Then you started doing pottery again. You said you were going to learn to cook and make pottery that reflects the meals you cooked, and it's been happening. It's been really awesome.
You haven't free dived as much, but you've been going on a trip. You're thinking of planning a trip this. Spearfishing is still on the list, but number one, I think our goal is to really learn how to prepare fish better before going out and learninging to hunt
You learn to make a killer papaya salad. Your pickling game is incredible, and you've figured out how to make good salads. As a result, you've leaned out a bit. You're not all the way to a six-pack, but you're feeling a lot more energy. You're on your whole longevity supplement stack, drinking olive oil, and doing all the Brian Johnson stuff. It's been a lot of fun, and you're feeling really great.
It's been great because you met your new gf too. You met her when you were working but had found more balance. I forget where - maybe it was pottery, or going to these shows, or doing jiu-jitsu - but you met her in real life by going up to her. You saw her, and you approached her. That was the first time that's ever happened. Usually, the people you meet are from apps, or they approach you, but you really saw her, and you chose her, and you still choose her.
She understands what it takes to run a business, and things are great. Some days it gets really busy, and they'll just suggest checking out a new play, going to a new exhibit, or hosting a dinner to help you de-stress. It's been wonderful. But she really trusts you.
She trusts you to be able to work hard and take care of the family.
By the way, her dad is really cool.
She's thinking of moving in with you. You've found more balance with the coursework, having fewer consultants clients. Ivan's got a new job thats way better and he’s growing a lot, you still pay him a bit to help with instructor, Marian’s running the courses, Maria is helping with your life.
Things are easy.
Things are peaceful.
You went to Europe and had a wonderful time. You spent most days looking at clothing and art, visiting all the museums you said you would. You walked around each city, talking to interesting people, asking them to show you around. You met your friends in London, Paris, and Germany.
Oh, and you actually did it - you went diving with the whales. On your trip to Europe, you brought so many things back.
Your home is beautiful. You've created a place that finally feels like yours - somewhere you can invite people to, somewhere you're proud of, somewhere that feels like home, somewhere your girlfriend thinks about moving into.
Work is thriving. People in New York think of you when they think of AI. They think of you when they want something to work on. You really made it.
You've learned to relax and know when to push. You understand that success in this next wave isn't about working twice or three times as hard - it's about building relationships, seeing opportunities, and dreaming. Your job is to make one or two good decisions a year. You made those decisions. You went out and asked people for what you want from the world, and it's happened.
It's only summer as I write this to you - things are moving really fast. I just want to let you know that things are okay. Things got easier. Everyone has issues, but leave that to me - leave that to the me in your future. You shouldn't worry about it. You take care of your business, and you enjoy your life, and I will enjoy mine.
I have to go now. Time for dinner. She's cooked my favourte thing, so I need to head downstairs.
Jason, I love you.
Call Mom.
Bye.
